Did you know it takes a vanilla bean plant three years to produce a pod? Once produced, pods are dried and fermented for an additional four to six months!
It’s totally worth the wait! Raw vanilla isn’t only one of the best smelling aromas in the world, it’s also a great antioxidant; supporting the immune system, cell regrowth, boosting mood and brain function. It’s also known to increase healing of skin inflammation, acne, and scars.
When purchasing, make sure to buy the real stuff. Extracts and pastes can contain alcohols and additives. Using the seeds from a pod or raw vanilla bean powder are the best ways to benefit from the bean’s natural source of antioxidants. Although, raw vanilla bean powder can be expensive, a little does go a long way. I store the package I bought in the fridge and it still smells as fresh as the day I opened it (a few months ago)!
I’m addicted to adding raw vanilla bean powder to pretty much everything! A pinch in pancakes, muffins, cookies, smoothes, puddings, and more! But definitely topping my list is adding a pinch in a warm cup of coconut or almond milk, the aroma alone knocks me off my feet.
All I use to make this delicious warm drink is…
Ingredients (Serves 1):
- 1 ½ cups unsweetened coconut or almond milk
- 2 tsp maple syrup or honey
- ¼ tsp raw vanilla bean powder
- Pinch of ground cinnamon and/or ground ginger (optional)
- Add all ingredients to a small pot.
- On medium, bring to simmer. Let simmer for 2-3 minutes, pour and enjoy!
- Remember to keep stirring while the ingredients heat, this will prevent a layer of film forming on top.
Enjoy this drink while it’s nice and warm. This is one of those drinks that for the moment, takes those worries away. So grab your favourite mug, put on those fuzzy slippers, sit back and enjoy the warm flavour and benefits vanilla has to offer.
