Gift giving can be challenging when you don’t know what to get or where to begin. I’m not sure when it blew up and became this big thing of getting everyone (especially those kiddies) everything under the sun. Don’t get me wrong, this blog post shares gift ideas a wellness guru would love but it’s definitely not meant to cast you under the endless gift-giving spell. Instead, I look at this post as a way to guide you through the uncertainty and last minute holiday gift giving stress.
Disclaimer: this is not a sponsored post. All opinions on these gift ideas are my own and I personally own all items and love them so much that I thought it would be helpful to share.
Here you have it folks, my top 10 wellness related gift ideas of 2018 and where to find them (don’t kill me if they’re already sold out).
Suitable for: Everyone (some gifts for ages 13+)
Price Range: $5 – $100
1. Clean Burning Candles
Sadly, there are many “dirty” candles out there –doing harm to the air we breathe and our health. This season, give the gift of a clean burning candle made of beeswax or soy (if vegan).
Learn more about the harmful ingredients found in conventional candles in this recent blog post from Joyous Health.
Where to find: some health stores may carry clean burning candles. In Toronto you can find them at; Candle Emporium, Soy Elegance Candles, Sage, the Big Carrot, and sometimes Whole Foods carries them too. There are also a ton of independent beeswax candle makers that sell their candles on Amazon and Kijiji.
2. Defuser & Essential Oils (together or separate)
Defusing essential oils in your home has a number of health benefits, including; purifying the air, creating restful sleep, promoting relaxation, and uplifting mood. I must admit, I was a bit skeptic of owning a defuser at first because I’m super sensitive to smells, but I quickly discovered as long as they were scents my body agreed to I actually loved their subtle aroma. Plus a good defuser has a built-in timer that releases a small burst of essential oil scent at a time, making the experience light and therapeutic.
My favourite scents: Lemon/Mandarin, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, and Lavender
3. Natural Ingredient Lip Balm
Here’s another product you assume that because you’re putting it on your body that the company’s done a solid job in keeping your health in check –sadly this is not the case. Read those labels people and look for lips balms/butters made from natural ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, fruit pigment, beeswax, peppermint oil, etc. Stay away from petroleum!
There are a number of clean ingredient lip brands out there. Do your research and see what brands are local to you. I love supporting Canadian clean beauty brands. One brand in particular that makes an amazing lip butter is the Rocky Mountain Soap Company. I absolutely love their ”Vanilla Candy Cane”.
Where to find: Tons of health food stores carry clean lip balm options. For example, Whole Foods, Healthy Planet, and the Big Carrot. The Rocky Mount Soap Company Lip Butter I linked above can be purchased online or at one of their retails stores (in Toronto: Yorkdale Mall and the Eaton Centre).
4. Yoga Mat
Ah the yoga mat, a classic yogi gift that never fails. With so many colours, sizes, and textures to choose from you really can’t go wrong. First things first, asses the height of who you’re buying it for. Yes, there are standard yoga mat sizes but if you purchase one from a large brand store they may offer different lengths. Also, does the individual you’re buying for take yoga classes or like to travel? If so, invest a few extra dollars and get a matching travel bag or cross-wear band.
Where to find: So many stores sell yoga mats these days. If you’re looking to splurge, check out LuluLemon, Healthy Life Cycle, or Sportchek. If you’re looking for something basic (may not offer the travel bag) then check out Canadian Tire or Wiinners/Marshalls/HomeSense (they carry a ton in cool colours). And of course, good ol’ Amazon is always your friend when it comes to online shopping.
5. Smoothie Blender
There’s a smoothie lover in every family (may be even a few). Gone are the days of having to bust out the heavy duty 2 litre blender for a quick single serving smoothie. Can I get an AMEN?! Smoothie sized blenders are a great gift for anyone that loves smoothies or are looking to test their smoothie making skills without all that mess!
Where to find: I currently have the Ninja Blender Kit that includes the smoothie attachments. I bought it many years ago when there weren’t as many options, basically settling for what I could find that was good qulality. Years later there are so many more options, you can pretty much find a small smoothie blender at any kitchen/home store. I’ve seen them at Walmart, Canadian Tire, Home Outfitters, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Kitchen Stuff Plus to name a few. Be sure to read the package details and warranty. Just like everything else, some come better built then others (do your research). Overall I’m happy with my Ninja but do feel there are cheaper options that work just as well.
6. Glass Mason Jar Set
There are so many creative ways to use mason jars. They’re great for; storing herbs and spices, smoothies, layered salads, meal prep, or even storing loose bedroom or bathroom odds and ends; making a great gift for any loved one or friend.
I enjoy the glass ones because they last longer, are better for the environment, and keep food fresher and cleaner. I also really like that they come in so many different sizes!
Where to find: home/kitchen stores and even some large dollar stores.
7. Bath Salts
Spruce up bath time with a pack (or two) of relaxing bath salts. For clean bath salt options, I like to stick with epsom salts that are infused with lavender and/or magnesium. I personally stay away from anything that has artificial dies and sparkles; 1- I don’t need that all up in my body and 2 – they make a mess!
Where to find: your local health or wellness store, Shoppers Drug Mart, Sage, The Body Shop, online (Amazon, Well.ca) …the list goes on and on.
8. Reusable Straws – Glass or Stainless Steel
By now, we should all know the negative affects plastic straws have on our environment. Help protect our planet by switching to a reusable straw and helping someone else over the holidays make the switch too. There are many cool colours and lengths to choose from, including straws with bends and ones without. I personally enjoy the glass ones (don’t worry they won’t break in your mouth!).
Where to find: I mostly see them online. A few health stores carry them but they sell out fast so your best bet is Amazon. Also, Healthnut Nutrition has them available on their online shop in a 4-pack.
9. Swell Water Bottle
You can never go with getting someone a water bottle. What’s fancy (and practical) about Swell water bottles is they keep liquid clean from heavy plastics and metals, and keep liquid at the temperature it was poured at for 6-8 hours –cool right? They also come in various colours and sizes. I have a small and large one (both black) and I enjoy the smaller one best because it fits easily in my purse but that’s just me. The large size is great for long car/bus rides.
Where to find: So many places! Home, kitchen, and fitness stores, and of course online.
10. Tri-Studio Class Pass
Bye bye “gym” membership, hello studio pass! You don’t have to be a fitness junkie to be and feel healthy. What’s important is that you move your body daily and have fun doing it. “Tri-Studios” are popping up everywhere in and around the city. What’s a Tri-Studio or simply just a Studio? It’s basically a centre/space equipped with trained experts that run studio based fitness/movement classes -no heavy weights or intimidating machinery. In my experience, I have found them to focus on three or more of the following; yoga, Pilates, spin/cycle, running, barre, dance, etc. They tend to also be more flexible in pricing which I love! No long-term commitments, just class passes to suit your lifestyle. I’ve noticed most offer unlimited monthly passes, a 10 or 5 class pass, and single trial passes. What’s not to love? You can choose the classes you want with the number of times you want to go.
This is a great gift for anyone that might want to try something new or already goes to a studio and wants a top-up on their class pass!
Where to find: search “fitness studios” or “yoga/spin classes” in Google and check out the locations that pop up in the area you’re looking for. A great studio in the core of Toronto is one owned and operated by fitness pro and author Heather Gardiner called Tribe Fitness.
