Born and raised in the big city of Toronto (3 million people big!), I’m accustom to buying and eating food without really taking the time to think about who grew it, harvested it, raised it, and so forth. Since starting my wellness driven health journey ten years ago, I’ve started researching and trying to understand where the food I eat comes from and how it’s grown or raised.
Over the years, I’ve come to realize how important it is to do your research and make decisions on the foods you eat. And, although you’ll never hear me preach about what you have to buy or where you have to buy it, you will find me share on some of my practices and how they’ve helped and guide my journey.
With this said, today’s blog will focus on why this city girl makes it a priority to visit a farm at least a few times a year. It doesn’t have to be the same farm each visit or a farm that has things to buy. Just a farm that’ll allow hubby and I to explore and appreciate mother-nature.
While the exploring part of the visit is super fun, it’s not the only reason I love visiting a local farm. In today’s blog I share with you my top reasons why I feel visiting a local farm supports your overall well-being…
1. Gets you active outdoors.
Nothing beats eco therapy, or what some have also started calling Vitamin G (“G” for greenery). Vitamin D deficiency is prominent amongst Canadians, especially those of us that live in the city and mostly work or study indoors. Visiting a farm isn’t just fun, it gets you outdoors, absorbing the sunlight, and physically active! Before you know it you’ve walked up and down hills, hoped over tree trunks, and enjoyed a few laps of the premise. You’ll be surprised how quickly a few hours of walking around goes by at the farm.
2. Helps keep you grounded.
There are many different definitions for the term “grounded” and how people like to use it when referencing to an emotion/feeling. For this purpose, I’m referring to the term in a sense of connecting with nature… literally connecting with it; getting your hands in it, touching it, feeling it, smelling it… the works. Vising a farm get you gets you right in there! How exciting right?! You get to pick your own apples (or whatever fruit’s in season), pet the farm animals, collect the eggs, touch the trees, smell the earthy (and maybe barn-like) air. Connecting with the earth’s natural charge gives your body a positive boost -it’s actually scientifically proven! That fuzzy warm vibe you get when jumping in the fall leaves, or running your hands or feet in the grass, it’s proven to do your body good!
3. Supports the “little guys”.
There are so many multimillion dollar food companies out there. I’m not saying these food companies didn’t start from something small either but when you have the opportunity to support a local family who is farming for the love of farming and providing quality wholefoods, how could you not want to support them.
4. Builds a respect for food.
In #3 I mentioned quality wholefood – well, not only do you get to enjoy quality wholefood that you purchased from your visit, you also get to thoroughly enjoy where it came from. Visiting the farm allows you to see and understand firsthand where that food came from, building what I like to call a form of food respect.
5. Provides a learning opportunity.
What better way to learn about how the food you eat is grown/raised then buy seeing it yourself! Yes, we can all read what it’s all about on the internet but I like to believe talking to an actual farmer teaches me more than any Google search. Have children? It’s an amazing opportunity for them to ask questions and explore where some of the foods they eat come from.
